Our ladies are more guilty of this. I don't know if they are trying to sound cool, exotic or simply just playing copycat but this trend is really unbecoming and annoying. Some girls just call everyone (both girls and guys) and anyone (familiar and not-too-familiar) pet names.
These days you'd just hear ladies call folks "sweetie", "dear/dearie", "honey/hun" "love/luv", "sugar", "babe" etc. I mean, it is becoming very common both online and offline. Are they trying to sound cool and trendy? Because it's not. It shows you don't understand the meaning and purpose behind those words.
If everybody (guys and ladies) is your "babe", "dearie", "honey", "sugar" and "sweetie", then what do you now call that SPECIAL person or friend or husband or wife or associate or colleague or mentor in your life? Super-babe? Super-sweetie? Super-honey? Super-dearie? Is that it?
My point is that certain vocabularies/names are by nature NOT MEANT FOR EVERYONE! I MEAN BY THEIR VERY NATURE!! They are meant for ONLY those special persons and individuals in our lives. Throwing these words around is not only an overuse but an ABUSE of great proportions.
And please, don't give me the lame argument that everyone in your life and that comes your way is 'special'. I understand that kind of thinking. Yes, everyone God created is special but not everyone is your "honey", your "sweetie", your "dearie", your "babe".
What I do personally is I call or greet everyone "Hi Great man" if you are male and "Hi Great woman" if you are female, just to recognize that special thing in every human. But I don't go around calling every woman and another man's future wife "babe", "sweetie", "honey", "dearie". I think it's disgusting.
If you've ever thought before now that it's a cool thing to do, STOP IT! It's ignorance. Ignorant zeal at work!
In the days of our parents, whenever these pet names were used for someone we automatically knew that person must be very special and different. But today, what do we have? Abuse everywhere. We don't even know who's special and who's regular anymore.
Words have meanings and some are only meaningful for special occasions, events and persons.
