I will never be able to get my head around the reason why many churches deceive their gullible members with faith healing. And I will still never be able to understand why too many religious Nigerians have failed to apply their brains in their practices of their various religious beliefs.
In my family Church where I grew up, we don't do modern day medicine. It was only until recently that the blocks on people's eyes started falling off, and more people are now going to hospitals when need be.
The Church advocates "faith healing". They ask you not to take even paracetamol. They believe prayers and fasting are solutions to every type of sickness, including stroke, diabetes and all.
They even employed an UNSKILLED woman they call midwife to handle deliveries. This woman together with the pastors' wives were in charge of handling pregnant women and deliveries.
Pregnant Church members were adviced to sign up for church antenatal with people who have got absolutely no training whatsoever.
A few women died in labour. Cause of death ranged from complicated cases to some other simple things which even a trained nurse would have been able to see to.
A man who had stroke was left in the Church, and was being massaged with olive oil twice a day. The man was forced to fast. He was asked not to swallow any tablet or medicine.
This man was left in the Church for weeks. As a child, I saw his health deteriorate till he finally went into coma. They rushed him to hospital when it was already too late. He died just hours after he was brought into the hospital.
In saner climes, this would be classified as voluntary manslaughter. And the Church and pastor would have faced the wrath of the law.
So many things my little mind couldn't comprehend happened in my church then. And now that I know better, I understand those were atrocities. Inhumanity masked in religion.
What about one other pentecostal church near my house that specialized in "curing" mad people? They tied these mentally unstable people up and inflicted all sorts of physical brutality on them.
There was a case where a church member brought in his child for deliverance. This seven year old was tied up in the church for days and beaten on a daily. They called it deliverance.
A doctor friend told the father of this girl that his child isn't possessed with the evil spirit, but that she looked like she's got learning disability, and needed to be on medication. But her father just wouldn't listen.
I came out one day and didn't hear this girl cry again. Rumour had it that she collapsed after an episode of beating, and was confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital.
I was about 8 at the time, so I felt her pain.
Just like many other Nigerians, I saw so many atrocities committed by Churches all in the name of deliverance, miracle and "faith healing", and I will never forget some of them.
#The_twist
I was astonished, infuriated and sad when I got to the UK to realize that the head of my family Church travels down to London twice a year for medical checkups in one of the biggest hospitals in London.
The head of a church that advocates "faith healing" for its members uses Church money to travel down to a country with one of the best health care systems for health checkups.
Dear Nigerian Christians,
YOUR PASTORS AND daddy and mummy GOs who preach miracles to you do NOT believe in their own miracles. They ask you to pray, sell holy water to you while they secretly use the money you donate to them to pay for some of the best health professionals in the world.
For how long are you going to remain stupid? Don't you ever learn? Why gamble with your life just to live in the illusion that your church is a miracle working church?
In the Bible, Jesus traveled around and healed the sick people he met. He didn't only heal the ones who came to him with faith, he healed many others.
Therefore, not until your miracle working Daddy and Mummy GOs go into the ICU units of random hospitals and heal the sick, my dear, this might hurt, but you are being played.
Good news! Your brain hasn't expired. So, you can start using it from today.... I mean NOW!!!
