This is the bane of Nigeria. Religious zeal absent knowledge, not really religion. I won't hold brief for other nations. My searchlight is on Nigeria.

Nigerians are not really religious. They are zealots- someone who believes fervently and militantly in something. To be a zealot you only need unbreakable and unshakable conviction. Knowledge is not a requirement. But true and real religion must be premised on sound thinking and robust knowledge. History demonstrates this much.

This in essence is what the Bible promotes. Throughout Scripture we see Knowledge extolled and exalted ('receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold'- Proverbs). We see investigation and inquiry lauded ('it is the glory of kings to search out a matter'- Proverbs). We see diligent search praised ('seek and ye shall find'- Jesus). Scripture when studied with an open mind promotes knowledge, investigation and research.
Little wonder the pioneers of Modern Science and Classical Philosophy were Staunch Bible Lovers. Newton, Pasteur, Kepler, Pascal, Faraday, Babbage, Morse, Augustine, Anselm, Aquinas, Descartes, Locke, Kant etc. These men gave us a better understanding of the world and changed how we think. Their inspiration? Scripture!

Yet, in Nigeria, it is the same Scripture we read and all we see are hashtags. Yes, no revelation for invention and innovation. JUST HASHTAGS! No insight into new ways of thinking (philosophy). JUST HASHTAGS! #hallelujahchallenge, #Olowogbogboro, #this, #that. And it gets worse.

Johannes Kepler was reportedly asked how he discovered the elliptical orbit of the planets, his response was that he was thinking God's thoughts after Him. That defining moment came as he researched and meditated on Scripture.

But here, stupid Nigerian youths (don't tell me not to call them stupid. It's English and it exists for a reason) are saying that Scripture cannot be understood in any particular way. That people should be allowed to choose what and how they understand scripture, Idiots! Continue your relativistic interpretation. No wonder you are Zealots and dance to every drum in the marketplace of religion. All #hashtags, no depth. Idiots! Again, these are English words for some people.

So, if you have a tenuous relationship with knowledge and a culture of research, then stop saying you are religious. You are a Zealot. Real religious folks left an indelible imprint on the sand of time.

Zealots always give Christians a tough task.
